Success Story: Anguilla resort supports feral cat Trap-Neuter-Release program

Anguilla - Cap Juluca Resort (www.capjuluca.com) has donated six cat traps to the Anguilla Animal Rescue Foundation (AARF) for its feral cat Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program that has been a success at the resort since 2004. That year, AARF approached Cap Juluca with the idea of a TNR program aimed at controlling the births of unwanted kittens on the property. Approximately 15 cats were trapped, sterilized and released back on the property where they are fed, watered and monitored by AARF member Suzie Donahue.

Unfortunately, in the past six months it became apparent that there was a sudden resurgence of kitten births at the resort - it is suspected that cats had been brought to the property by well-meaning owners who did not want them and knew they would receive care at Cap Juluca.

The trapping has begun again where there are currently six feeding
stations with food provided by the resort . The donated traps will be used on the property and are also available to other hotels or individuals with a
feral cat problem.

For information on establishing feral cat colonies and a TNR program, contact Suzie Donahue of AARF: aarfinfo@aarf.ai

Hotel donates rooms to help Puerto Rico animals

Puerto Rico - Villa Tropical (www.villatropical.com/) has donated a weekend stay in an ocean front apartment during the month of October to the Puerto Rico Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Isabela, Puerto Rico. In 2007, PAWS sold $1 raffle tickets for a chance to win the weekend stay. PAWS raised a total of US$830. Clients of PAWS who were not able to afford the low-cost spay/neuter program were asked to sell raffle tickets in exchange for free services.

This year, Villa Tropical owners have donated another weekend package to PAWS to benefit the animal group's education, adoption and spay/neuter programs. "I think this is an easy way the tourism industry can help animal welfare groups," said PAWS founder, Dr. Gwen Davis. "The hotel gets free publicity and a reputation as animal friendly. In turn, animal welfare groups can help find homes for any stray animals on the hotel's property. Everyone benefits, especially the animals."
